This wasn't limited to obscure or poorly maintained plugins. Page builders, form tools, calendar components, and template frameworks used across huge numbers of live sites were affected, including Helix Ultimate, the template framework many Joomla sites, including some we manage, are built on.

The lesson: popularity and a solid reputation tell you a tool is maintained. They don't guarantee it's free of every risk.

Attackers now use AI tools to compare a patched extension against its previous version, quickly work out what was fixed, and turn that into a working attack within hours of the update going public.
"We'll update it next weekend" is no longer a safe approach. The gap between a fix being released and a vulnerable site being attacked is now measured in hours, not weeks.
