Joomla 6.0 Beta Review: New Features and What to Expect

Joomla 6.0

Joomla 6.0 Beta just arrived, giving us an early look at the next big CMS release. I tested the new version, explored its features, and compared it to earlier builds. In this review, I’ll highlight the key updates, new improvements, and what you can expect when Joomla 6.0 launches as a stable release.

Release Overview

Joomla has already released three Beta versions for its upcoming 6.0 launch, with Joomla 6.0 Beta 3 arriving on 16th September 2025. The new version encourages testing and early feedback, allowing developers and agencies to explore features, check extension compatibility, and prepare for future upgrades.

The Joomla team announced that the stable Joomla 6.0 release will roll out on 14th October 2025. Although the beta shouldn’t run on live websites, it marks an important milestone and shows how Joomla is improving performance, usability, and developer-focused tools.

Key Features in Joomla 6.0 Beta

Added New step

Joomla 6 gives us the option to disable Automatic Joomla Update features right from the installation completion screen.

Joomla 6.0 Added New step
Batch tag removal functionality

In Joomla 5, adding tags to multiple articles is easy, but removing them is time-consuming. Joomla 6 introduces Tag Add/Remove in Batch Options, saving time for bloggers, news sites, and anyone managing large volumes of content.

Joomla 6.0 Batch Tag Feature
Two New Custom Fields added

Small but very useful additions in the custom fields :

  • Number : No need for workarounds with integer or text fields—Joomla 6 now includes a number field, perfect for values like price, age, rating, or quantity.
  • Note : Lets you leave instructions or reminders for content editors, e.g., “Don’t forget to upload a high-quality image here.”

Checked out filter

Another handy Joomla 6 change is the Checked Out filter. On busy sites, articles often get “locked” when users forget to close them. Now you can filter by checked-out status, making it easy to find and unlock such articles.

API Gets Date Range Filter for Modified Articles

From a developer’s perspective, the new API with Date Range Filter is very useful. It allows clients to display articles modified within a specific date range, both inside and outside the Joomla site.

GET /api/index.php/v1/content/articles?filter[modified_start]=2025-08-01&filter[modified_start]=2025-08-31

Extended Versioning functionality

One of Joomla’s best features is content versioning, letting you restore old article versions. Until now, it only saved titles, content, and basic data—custom fields and tags weren’t included. With Joomla 6, versioning now also stores custom fields and tags, so all changes can be restored together.

New Date and Datetime Standard Form Fields

The new Date/Date-Time fields simplify handling event dates, bookings, or deadlines. Previously, admins had to use text fields or calendars with extra JS validation. This small change saves time for both admins and content authors.

Added a Module Tag

This means you can choose to load the module’s content inside a tag.
It gives your site more semantic HTML. It can improve SEO by making it clear which part of your website is related to search.

New Reminder Email Option for User Accounts

Joomla 6 adds a Send Activation Reminder button in the User Edit form. With one click, admins can email users who registered but never logged in—no custom coding needed. Emails use the standard Joomla template and can be customized.

Who Should Try Joomla 6.0 Beta?

Joomla 6.0 Beta is not meant for live production sites, but it’s highly valuable for anyone who wants to prepare for the stable release. Here’s who will benefit the most from testing it now:

  • Developers – to check extension and template compatibility, explore the new APIs, and start adapting code for Joomla 6.
  • Agencies & Freelancers – to understand new workflows, performance changes, and prepare for upcoming client upgrades.
  • Website Owners & Enthusiasts – to get an early feel for the new interface, improved content tools, and performance boosts before deciding on future migrations.
  • Community Contributors – to test, report bugs, and help refine Joomla 6 before it goes stable.

Testing the beta ensures fewer surprises when the stable release arrives, and it gives you a head start in planning upgrades or new projects on Joomla 6.

Limitations & Beta Considerations

Use Joomla 6.0 Beta strictly for testing, not for live websites. Since developers are still building it, you may face bugs, incomplete features, and extension compatibility issues. Explore and prepare with this version, but wait for the stable release before deploying it on production sites.

Upgrade Considerations: From Joomla 4 and Joomla 5 to Joomla 6

You don’t need to move from Joomla 4 to Joomla 6, but upgrading gives you time-saving tools like batch tag removal, custom fields, and advanced template controls.

Joomla 5 users can upgrade smoothly and gain features that once required custom code, such as activation reminders, versioning for custom fields and tags, and advanced template styling.

My First Impressions

After testing Joomla 6.0 Beta, it’s clear that the focus is on usability and efficiency for both developers and content managers. Even the smaller additions, like Number/Note fields, Date/Time fields, the Checked-out filter, and Module Tag, make day-to-day management smoother.

On the visual side, the new Advanced Colour and Font Settings give clients more freedom to handle branding without always relying on developers. Meanwhile, features such as extended versioning and API improvements provide developers with more control and easier maintenance for their projects.

Overall, Joomla 6 feels like a thoughtful upgrade — not just adding flashy features, but introducing practical improvements that make working with the CMS more efficient.

Stay Updated

Joomla 6 currently offers a beta release, so it hasn’t reached full stability and some features may still change before the final version. Expect bugs and compatibility issues, and avoid using it on live production sites.

The Joomla team plans to release the stable version on 14 October 2025. At that point, site owners, developers, and agencies can safely plan upgrades or new projects. Meanwhile, the beta gives you a great chance to test new features, explore improvements, and prepare ahead of time.

We’ll update this blog once the stable version is out, providing a complete Joomla 6.0 review and practical guidance on upgrading smoothly.
